Researcher biography


Habte Belete Gobie commenced his PhD in 2021 offshore with the award of a UQ International Scholarship for "Prevention of risky behaviour and mental illness in adolescents", presented a poster at the 40th [virtual] APSAD meeting for November 2021 and arrived at his Brisbane desk in January 2022. Habte's principal supervisor is Associate Professor Janni Leung, and co-supervisors are A/Prof Gary Chan and Professor Leanne Hides.

Habte was previously an academic staff member of Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. He has been involved in research work and published articles in the area of mental health and substance misuse, and involved in teaching undergraduate and masters’ students in his department, Department of Psychiatry. Habte has a BSc degree in psychiatric nursing and master of science in Integrated Clinical and Community Mental Health.

Habte and colleagues have published the paper ‘Cannabis use in Sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis’ in leading alcohol and drug journal Addiction.
